The terminology used to describe exhaust gas extraction systems can be complex for those who are not experts in this specific field.
With this article, we provide you with a glossary of the most common and significant technical terms related to vehicle exhaust extraction systems.

Vehicle exhaust extraction systems: the most common terms
The installation of an exhaust gas extraction systems system is essential in a working environment, such as a vehicles and repair shop where vehicles motors are often switched on releasing exhaust gas into the environment. Exhaust systems have to extract harmful substances by conveying the gases from the exhaust point (the muffler) to the outside, in order to maintain the working environment healthy.
Let’s go futher with this important topic: the most common terminology used in the field of exhaust gas extraction systems.
Fixed systems
The main feature of fixed systems is that they require permanent installation. These systems involve one or more hoses equipped with a fan through which the exhaust gas is extracted and conveyed to the outside.
They are highly recommended for specific area dedicated to vehicles inspection/repair.
Sliding systems
Sliding systems As not all the engines of the vehicles in the workshop will be started at the same time, a pair of sliding elements can cover many work areas by being slided to the required working place. They consist of an aluminium extractor rail on which the sliding elements run that can cover several working area: hose-holding trolleys, hose reels, and the GTL arm .
When the extraction is not needed, one of the sliding system main advantages is that technicians can keep working above the area without creating an obstacle or hindering work; all the sliding elements (trolley, hoe reels or GTL arm) can be moved along the channel, where extraction is needed, thus optimizing the available space.
Underfloor systems
The underfloor system involves a fixed piping system housed under the floor.
Underfloor systems are divided into two categories:
- the first is the one with lodged hoses under the floor, which are extracted at the time of aspirating the fumes;
- the second has hose-holding bends grafted to the floor traps, then a centralized suction expel the exhaust into the atmosphere
Mobile or stand-alone system
Mobile or stand-alone systems are very flexible solution, suitable for small workshops.
These mobile units are available in different models and can be easily moved to different work areas.
To convey the exhaust gases to the outside fans have to be connected to exhaust hoses.
Exhaust fan
The exhaust fan is an important part of the system, and choosing the right model of exhaust fan is essential to having an efficient and functional exhaust system.
To make the operation of the vacuum system more functional and faster, vacuum cleaners can be connected to switchboards enabled to remotely receive the on/off command. This can be done via microswitches on reels or via remote controls, significantly optimizing the work of operators.
Piping
The pipes are used to convey the gases drawn from the muffler to the exhaust fan and then to the outside.
Different types of piping may be present in an extraction system:
- rigid ones (in fixed installations)
- flexible ones (in fixed or mobile installations)
Flexible hoses are to be connected to the nozzles and exist in different versions (resistant to various temperatures from 200°C up to 1000°C) and in various diameters. The flexible hoses are connected on one side to the nozzles (there are also various models of the nozzles)
Touchless universla arm
The arm with touchless technology is a self-supporting arm supported by a sophisticated system of springs and clutches, which allows it to be positioned behind the vehicles muffler without touching it.
GTL arms can be tailored to serve a specific working area (stationary version for wall or high level mounting) or to cover multiple working bays (sliding track version).
This is a universal solution, which eliminates the need for specific nozzles. This means a significant saving on adapters costs, which then become unnecessary.
Nozzles
The exhaust gas, leaving the muffler, are collected inside the vents, then conveyed on the exhaust fan.
The vents are fitted on the vehicle muffler or close to it (e.g. GYNMA version that is mounted in a trolley). The vents have to be connected to the hoses on one side and to the vehicle muffler on the other, to extract the gases and ensure that the working environment is not contaminated. The mufflers of different vehicles have very different sizes and shapes, which means that the nozzles must also have different shapes and sizes to suit the mufflers and the main vehicle models.
Coilers
Coilers are used to coil flexible pipes. There are several types of coils:
- mechanical coils
- mechanical coils with fan
- electric hose coils
- electric hose coils with fan
The coilers can also be equipped with high-extraction systems
