However, despite its importance, welding can pose a health risk to workers if the appropriate safety measures are not taken. The adoption of a fume extraction system for welding is not only a matter of regulatory compliance, but a real investment in terms of employee welfare and attracting new talent. We talk about it in today's article! ## Fume extraction system for welding and employee health: the link Welding produces fumes that contain a variety of heavy metals and harmful gases. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), prolonged exposure to these fumes can cause a variety of [health problems](https://blog.worky-italy.com/en-us/industry/reduce-welding-fumes?hsLang=en-us), including: - **Respiratory diseases**: welding fumes can irritate the respiratory tract and lead to chronic diseases such as asthma. - **Cancer**: some metals present in welding fumes, such as hexavalent chromium and nickel, are recognised as carcinogens. - **Damage to the nervous system**: exposure to manganese and other heavy metals can cause neurological damage, with Parkinson's-like symptoms. An article published in [The Safety Mag](https://www.thesafetymag.com/ca/topics/safety-and-ppe/welding-fumes-spark-serious-health-hazards/183737) states that welders exposed to uncontrolled fumes have a significantly higher risk of developing lung diseases than the general population. For these reasons, it is essential to minimize exposure to welding fumes, and a fume extractor is an effective solution.
