High-temperature exhaust extraction for generators | WORKY

Written by Lino Di Betta | July 20 2026

When a generator needs to be repaired, serviced or tested, the engine must often be started inside or close to a working area. As soon as it runs, it produces exhaust gases that can be released in significant volumes and at very high temperatures.

This is why effective generator exhaust extraction is essential. A dedicated system helps protect technicians from exposure to hazardous pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and diesel particulate matter, while also keeping the working environment safer and more controlled.

In applications involving generators, standard workshop extraction components may not be enough. The temperature of the exhaust gases, the engine displacement and the volume of fumes produced all require careful technical assessment and components designed for high-temperature operation.

Why generators need a dedicated exhaust gas extraction system

Generator exhaust fumes can be particularly challenging to manage. Depending on the size and power of the engine, the flow rate can be high and the exhaust gas temperature can exceed the limits of conventional workshop hoses and nozzles.

A system designed for cars or light workshop use may therefore be unsuitable for generator maintenance. If the hose, nozzle or extraction arm is not specified correctly, the system may lose efficiency, deteriorate prematurely or fail to provide adequate protection for operators.

For this reason, generator exhaust extraction should be designed around the real working conditions of the site, including the type of generator, the test duration, the available space, the extraction point and the required temperature resistance.

Heat-resistant extraction arms and flexible hoses

To manage high-temperature exhaust gases safely, the choice of components is critical. WORKY designs extraction arms and boom systems with flexible hoses suitable for high-temperature applications, available in different diameters and temperature ratings.

Depending on the application, hoses can be selected for resistance to 300°C, 500°C, 700°C or even 1,000°C. Large-diameter flexible hoses are often recommended for generators, as they help manage the high volumes of exhaust gas produced by larger engines.

Flexible hoses resistant up to 500°C

The flexible hose resistant up to 500°C is made from glass-fibre fabric with an aluminised coating, sewn with glass-fibre fabric coated on both sides with silicone. An external metal wire is sewn into the hose wall together with a high-temperature protection strip. Each end is reinforced with spiral-free cuffs to improve durability and connection stability.

Flexible hoses resistant up to 700°C

For more demanding applications, WORKY can specify a flexible hose resistant up to 700°C. This is a three-layer hose externally reinforced with metal wire and equipped with a high-temperature protection strip sewn into the wall. The ends are reinforced with spiral-free cuffs, helping the hose withstand harsher operating conditions.

Flexible hoses resistant up to 1,000°C

Where extremely high temperatures are involved, WORKY can provide a flexible hose resistant up to 1,000°C. This hose is manufactured from two layers of silica and vermiculite fabric combined with Inconel glass fabric, reinforced with an external metal wire sewn into the wall with a high-temperature anti-slip protection strip. Each end is reinforced with spiral-free cuffs.

Metal and stainless-steel nozzles for high temperatures

In high-temperature applications, the nozzle is just as important as the hose. Special metal or stainless-steel exhaust nozzles help ensure resistance to the heat generated by specific vehicles, engines and generator sets.

Using quality materials and tailor-made high-temperature solutions means maintaining the effectiveness of the extraction system over time. It also reduces the risk of premature wear, heat damage or insufficient capture at the exhaust outlet.

A tailored solution for every generator application

There is no single standard configuration for all generator exhaust extraction systems. The most suitable solution depends on several factors, including:

  • the type and power of the generator;
  • the expected exhaust gas temperature;
  • the volume of fumes produced;
  • the available working space;
  • the position of the exhaust outlet;
  • the required hose diameter and length;
  • whether the system needs to be fixed, mobile, wall-mounted or integrated into a larger extraction layout.

Having access to a broad range of products makes it possible to select the most appropriate configuration and customise the system according to the real requirements of the facility.

FAQ

Why is generator exhaust extraction different from standard vehicle exhaust extraction?

Generators can produce large volumes of exhaust gases at high temperatures. This means that standard hoses and nozzles may not be suitable, especially when long tests or powerful engines are involved.

What temperature resistance is available for WORKY high-temperature hoses?

Depending on the application, WORKY can specify flexible hoses resistant to 300°C, 500°C, 700°C or up to 1,000°C.

Why are metal or stainless-steel nozzles recommended?

Metal and stainless-steel nozzles are designed to withstand the heat produced by demanding engines and generator sets, helping preserve the performance and safety of the extraction system.

Can WORKY design a customised system for generator maintenance areas?

Yes. WORKY can support the project from technical assessment to solution design, selecting the most suitable arms, hoses, nozzles and extraction layout for the specific working environment.
